Jewellery sales fall into some really interesting patterns across the year.
The most obvious one being that immovable feast known as Christmas, when presents are a (usually) essential part of the festivities, and jewellery an easy choice for women.
But in addition to that are some of the lesser dates in the calendar. Valentines is a biggie, with pinks and reds and heart emblems featuring high on the priorities list for gifts. Then there’s Mother’s Day; less on the hearts piece but big on jewellery in general, with amber often popular given the age group.
Next – in non-lockdown years (insert eye-roll emoji) – is the wedding season. Of course, pearl jewellery is perfect as a companion to that ivory silk gown, with necklaces & earrings proving popular. But it doesn’t stop there - those bridesmaids outfits need matching jewellery too (often purchased as a gift) so the purple colour schemes call for amethyst jewellery, and the blue concepts iolite pieces etc. I know that for my own wedding I purchased all of my Hens little rose quartz hearts on chains, then made necklaces of garnet, tourmaline, amethyst, garnet & pink pearls - which the little hearts fitted onto - for my bridesmaids. All the Hens wore their hearts on the wedding day, and they looked fantastic.
Interestingly, as the seasons change, so do jewellery trends. Summer lends itself to delicate pieces, and winter to more chunky designs (think: a chain worn over a rollneck). And colours move with the weather too, with amber popular in the autumn because it emulates the hue of the leaves, and turquoise hot in the summer where those bright blue skies & azure seas scream out aqua.
Finally are birthstones, which are oh-so-helpful when struggling for gift inspo. Now, is it just me, or does everybody secretly want to be born at the start of the year and get to “have” amethyst & garnet? Each month brings a new stone associated with it (or approximately associated with it as the zodiac stones never totally align with the calendar month) so there is always a route to take when there’s a present to buy.
But ignoring Christmas, Valentines, Mother’s Day, weddings or birthstones, the best thing about jewellery is that it’s a guaranteed winner of a gift. No size issues like clothing, or blisters like shoes – and so many of The Silver Sprite pieces are priced in a way that a present needn’t even have a purpose… either for somebody special, or just for yourself.
